One way to support the black community is by reading, reviewing, and recommending books by black authors.
Here are five books by black authors I think you’ll enjoy.
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jaqueline Woodson
Brown Girl Dreaming is a memoir about growing an African-American girl growing up in the 60s and 70s. She is a writer discovering her voice and a child living through struggle. This is her story of hardship, hope, and joy.
This book was engaging, and the format definitely worked well. The writing is beautiful and there are so many great quotes hidden inside.
Brown Girl Dreaming was one of my favorite books of 2018. Read my review here.
Patty is a middle-school-age girl who runs for her mom, her sister, for herself, and in honor of her dad. From a track meet to taking care of her sister, Maddy, Patina’s life is anything but boring. And she ain’t no junk.
Patina is written in raw first-person and filled with strong, passionate characters that are hard not to fall in love with.

Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly
Hidden Figures is about five black women who were influential in Apollo 11.
I read the junior edition with my tween book club a few years ago. It is very informative and eye-opening.
Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson
Jade is an African – American girl who learns to speak up for herself and not to give up.
This is a very character-focused book. I loved reading about the characters, their relationships with each other, and especially Jade, who is creative and relatable.

Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis
Bud runs away from his foster home in search of his father.
This is a sweet, heartwarming family story. The narrator’s voice was fun to read and I love the author’s style.
