Dear Reader,
Hello! I hope your week is off to a great start.
Book tropes are plot elements used in multiple stories from various genres and age groups. Tropes provide a sense of predictability and comfort. They are so fun to discuss with fellow readers.
Some of my favorite tropes are enemies to friends or lovers, chosen family, and not like other girls.
Enemies to BFFs / Enemies to Lovers
This one gets me every single time! It’s just so cute. Sometimes, I start off disliking a character just as much as the other characters, and by the end, they’re my new favorite.
In Legendborn, Sel and Bree started off as enemies and threatened to murder each other at some point but were friends by the end. I (and some of the other Legendborn fans) am hoping that maybe by the end of the series, they could be lovers.
Chosen/Found Family
This trope might be my #1 favorite. It always gives the book a wholesome vibe and makes me love the characters even more. I can’t help but want to support characters who support each other. It’s even better when combined with enemies to best friends.
One of my favorite books ever, The Mysterious Benedict Society, is the G.O.A.T. of chosen family. It’s also in the book I’m writing.
Not Like Other Girls
Quirky characters are the best characters. Especially if they don’t care that they’re different from everyone else.
This trope tends to get a bad rap, which I don’t really understand. I guess it’s because it sometimes gets overdone. But when it’s done well, the characters are unique, well-rounded, and easy to root for.
My favorite book with this trope is Star Girl, which I read earlier this year. I plan on rereading it sometime soon.
What are your favorite book tropes? Let me know in the comments. I might take a little longer to respond because by the time this post airs I will have just arrived in Germany and will still be trying to sleep off the timey-wimey-ness.
Thanks for reading, friend!
with love,
Elizabeth Anne
