When drawing characters, it may be hard to tell how tall we should make them. One way that you can know how tall to make your figures is by using heads.
This means that after you draw the head you can find out where the legs should end by measuring out a certain number of heads based on the size of the first one.
Basically, you multiply the size of the head by the number of heads tall you want your figure to be. For example, if the head was 1 in. long and you wanted your figure to be 6 heads tall, you would make your figure 6 in. tall.
Height varies by age, person, and gender, so there is no “right” height, but here are some measurements to help get you started.
For child figures:
A toddler would be about 4 heads tall. A child ages four to ten could be anywhere between five and six heads.
For teen figures:
A teen girl, sixteen and younger, would be somewhere between six and a half heads and seven heads.
A teen boy, sixteen and younger, would be somewhere between six and a half heads and seven and a half heads.
For adults:
A woman seventeen and up would be around seven and a half heads tall.
A man seventeen and up would be around eight heads.
Head Count is NOT the only factor in height!
Of course, the size of the head is going to play a part in the actual height of the person. A person who has a smaller head and is seven heads tall is going to be shorter than a person of the same number of heads tall, with a larger head.
Keep in mind that your figure will also look shorter or taller based on the perspective of the drawing. Also, some people will be shorter or taller than others. Include variety in your drawings.
Have fun and practice, practice, practice!
