I was inspired this week by the title of the Washington Post’s photography section, “We can’t go back to normal.” It’s an idea that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.
We have all been taken out of our norm, in one way or another.
We are separated from family and friends, our plans are canceled, we have to wear these strange pieces of fabric on our faces, and all of a sudden toilet paper is the most requested item on Amazon. Not to mention the protests, or moves to eradicate racism that erupted over the summer and late spring.
It’s easy to wish we could go back to normal. Normalcy is comfortable.
But now that we’ve been forced out of it, will we go back?
Or, . . . will we create a new normal?
See, there are some things that are normal and well, shouldn’t be normal – selfishness, busy uninterrupted schedules, racism, genderism, to name a few.
What if, instead of “going back to normal”, we use this opportunity to create a world where those things aren’t normal anymore?
There are many ways to do this. You can yell “THAAANNK YOOOOUU” to your delivery carrier, or make a card for someone who is feeling lonely. You can make events virtual to reach audiences from far away. You can use your platform to promote equality. The possibilities are endless.
Yours,
Elizabeth Anne
