I recently finished the first to books in the Legacy of Orisha series. It has quickly become one of my favorites and I can’t wait for the third to come out.

They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.
Now we rise.
What I Loved:
Character connections can make or break a book for me and this is the most emotional connection I’ve had with a character in literature. I also thought the pacing and plot twists were done well.
The romance was the best I’ve ever read. It’s written so that the reader “ships” the characters before the characters even know they’re falling in love. It was also refreshing to find that the romance wasn’t completely pointless and played a part in the plot.
I loved that this was an allegory for the modern black experience. I will never understand what black men and women go through but this book brought me closer.
What I Didn’t Love:
Almost all the romance happens at the 75% mark in the book and there are a few uncomfortable scenes, especially in the dreamscape.
Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi
What I Loved:
Children of Virtue and Vengeance maintains pretty much all of the qualities I found in Children of Blood and Bone. The allegory wasn’t as evident here, though, which can be expected for a sequel.
I physically couldn’t put this down. The ending stressed me out so much after I finished it.
What I Didn’t Love: My least favorite character died in Book 1 and came back here.
