These past few months have been very busy for me. I moved from Wiesbaden, Germany to El Paso, TX, and I’m preparing to start college in a few weeks. In addition, I’ve also been creating posts for my Instagram account, @prickly.pear.poetry!
From February 2022 to spring 2023, I was on a break from Instagram. I decided to take a break from it because it was taking up a lot of my time and headspace. During the time I was off Instagram, I discovered a new hobby in poetry!
I decided to log back into Instagram this spring because a lot of my friends use it to communicate and I needed it to see updates from college-related Instagram accounts. After logging back in, I followed a few poetry accounts, such as @diaryofaromantica and @raeganspoetry, which inspired me to create videos similar to theirs!
I thought about starting the account for a few months, but wasn’t sure if I was ready to commit to it. Besides that, I had to think of a good name.
The name came to me while I was in line at the Frankfurt airport. The name “prickly pear poetry” is inspired by the prickly pear which are ubiquitous in El Paso. Plus, it’s a alliterative, which I love!
Once I had a name, I went ahead and created the account, right there in the airport. It was a great way to pass the time waiting on our flight. If I were to do it again, though, I would have waited a few days, because it used a lot of my phone battery!
Since starting my Instagram account, I have made 24 posts. They are mostly poetry reading videos and a few screenshots of poems in my Notes app.
Sharing my poetry on Instagram has been incredible for my confidence in my own writing ability, and my comfortability with sharing my work.
I remember being so nervous during my first video! I took about a hundred takes in the hotel and my voice was really shaky, even in the final take. Now, I am able to read more naturally and I’m reading poems I never thought I’d ever let anyone hear.
Thank you to everyone who already supports me on this blog and my Instagram account! Please follow me on @prickly.pear.poetry and continue to subscribe on here. I will have lots of fun content coming up soon!
