February is National Letter Writing Month.
To celebrate, this month, I and my sister, plan to write a letter every day of the month.
Letter writing is a fun, easy way to contact friends, show your thankfulness, or even meet someone new through pen-pal-ing.
For those of ya’ll new to letter writing, here are some tips to keep in mind.
Ask Questions
Asking questions, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to learn something new about someone else.
Here is a list of great questions to ask, whether starting a “pen-pal-ship” or writing to someone you already know well.
- What is your favorite food?
- What is (fill in name of the place where pen pal lives) like?
- What are your hobbies?
- How is your activity going?
- What have you been (reading, writing, listening to, etc.) lately?
- What (websites, magazines, books) would you recommend.
Be Polite
Asking your pen pal about their week, inviting them to write them back, and thanking them for a compliment or gift they gave you in their last letter are always good ideas.
Send Gifts
It is always a nice surprise when I receive a gift from a friend in the mail, alongside a handwritten letter.
Here are some ideas to get you started.
- A bag of tea
- A photo of you and your family
- A bookmark
- A drawing
- Stickers
Remember Special Holidays
Ask your pen pal when their birthday is, and put it on your calendar so you can send them a card when the time comes. Christmas cards and Valentine’s are great too!
Write Back
Your pen pal will love to hear back from you! No matter how long it takes you when you write back to a pen pal, you continue the conversation between the two of you.
What tips do you have for letter writing? Are you going to write a letter this month?
