This is a poem I wrote this week about growing up. I hope you enjoy it and have a great weekend!
At the playground the other day
I saw three kids by the swing set
Two girls, one with black hair one blonde
And I think the boy was blonde too
“Let’s all be friends, what do you say?”
“My mom’s hidden candy I’ll get”
“We can be mermaids in the pond”
“Has anyone seen my left shoe?”
And as I listened to them talk
I remembered when that was us
When sharing sweets was all it took
And trading toys was all we needed
Before they watched the way we walk
Or who we sit with on the bus
Before we all learned how to look
Like the wildflowers weren’t weeded
What if we had stayed that simple
What if collecting memories
Like butterflies in mason jars
To put on a shelf had never
Turned to praying in a temple
Built of our insecurities
With an altar of hidden scars
We could have stayed simple forever

I’ll be completely honest and tell you that I teared up a bit while reading this
